As is to be expected the Singapore River is quite important inasmuch
as Raffles sailed into Singapore by traveling a short way up the
the river before landing and putting everything in motion. Much
of Singapore's early development centred around the river and as
such it has many historical points of interest. However it is only
fairly recently that there has there been a concerted effort to
commercially develop the area to take advantage the river's natural
beauty and recreational potential to promote it as a tourist destination.
For our purposes we start at Clarke Quay and walk westward. There
is a nice selection of fine hotels that offer exceptional value
for money. As well, Chinatown is just next door and the Financial
District is only 5 minutes away. Entertainment in the area is centered
around Clarke Quay, an area chuck full of old warehouses and shophouses
that have been renovated and turned into first-class venues complete
with restaurants, pubs, cafes, classy boutiques and the like. FYI,
in order to remain objective, hotels are listed in alphabetical
order, we don't favor any hotel for any reason.
